Privacy Policy

This policy explains how UK Data Hub handles information when you browse the site, search for local data, contact us or contribute to the My Local Data project.

UK Data Hub does not currently provide user accounts, paid services or marketing subscriptions. If that changes, this policy will be updated before those features are introduced.

When you enter a postcode, place name or coordinates, that search is sent to UK Data Hub and the data services needed to return the requested result. A postcode may also appear in the page URL, which means it can be retained in browser history and ordinary server logs.

The site asks for your device location only when you choose a ‘use my location’ feature and your browser grants permission. The coordinates are used to perform that search; UK Data Hub does not continuously track your location.

The contact form collects your name, email address, subject, message and any screenshots you choose to attach. This information is used to read and respond to your message, investigate reported problems and maintain an appropriate record of the correspondence.

Contact submissions are protected by Cloudflare Turnstile. The form sends a verification token and relevant technical request information, including your IP address, to Cloudflare for abuse prevention. Accepted messages are delivered through UK Data Hub’s email provider.

The Energy Reality Check asks for a postcode district rather than a full postcode, together with household and energy information such as bill amount, property type, household size, heating and supply details, usage, supplier and affordability rating. It does not ask for your name, address, account number or meter number.

If you choose to save a submission, it is sent to the separately operated UK Data Hub API so that it can contribute to anonymous comparisons and aggregated community results. Cloudflare Turnstile is used to reduce automated or abusive submissions.

The hosting platform, API service and security providers may create routine logs containing information such as IP address, request time, requested URL, browser or device information and error details. These logs are used to deliver the service, diagnose failures, prevent abuse and protect the site.

UK Data Hub uses Google Analytics 4, delivered through Google Tag Manager, to understand aggregate site usage such as pages viewed, interactions, approximate location and device or browser characteristics. UK Data Hub does not currently load Google advertising or Microsoft Clarity scripts.

If you ask the weather dashboard to remember a location, its name and coordinates are stored in your browser’s local storage. A session-storage entry is also used to remember when you dismiss certain crime-data notices. This information stays in that browser unless you clear it.

Google Analytics may use analytics cookies or similar identifiers to distinguish visits and measure site usage. Cloudflare Turnstile may use cookies or similar browser signals on pages containing a protected submission form. You can remove stored information using your browser settings.

UK Data Hub relies on providers for website hosting, the separate UK Data Hub API, email delivery, spam protection, maps and public-data or location lookups. These include Vercel, Cloudflare Turnstile, CARTO and services such as postcodes.io, as well as the official and public sources listed on the Data Sources page.

Those providers receive only the requests and technical information needed to supply their part of the service. Their own privacy terms apply when your browser connects to them directly, for example when loading map tiles or a verification challenge.

Information is used to provide searches and dashboards you request, respond to messages, produce anonymous community comparisons, keep the service secure and reliable, and comply with legal obligations.

Depending on the activity, the basis for processing is providing the service you requested, UK Data Hub’s legitimate interests in operating and securing the service, your consent where it is requested, or a legal obligation.

Contact messages, technical logs and community submissions are retained only for as long as they are reasonably needed for their stated purpose, security, record-keeping or legal requirements. Aggregated statistics that no longer identify an individual may be retained for longer.

Reasonable technical and organisational safeguards are used, but no internet service or storage system can guarantee absolute security.

Personal information is not sold. It may be shared with the service providers described above, where required by law, or where necessary to investigate abuse or protect the service and its users.

Some providers may process information outside the United Kingdom. Where data-protection law requires it, appropriate transfer safeguards are expected to apply through the relevant provider arrangements.

Depending on the circumstances, you may have rights to ask for access to personal data, correction, deletion, restriction, portability or an objection to processing. You may also withdraw consent where consent is the basis being used.

To make a privacy request, email userdata@ukdatahub.co.uk. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office if you believe your data-protection rights have been infringed.

The service is intended for a general audience and is not designed to collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has submitted personal information, contact us so that it can be reviewed.

This policy will be updated when the service or its data practices change. The date shown at the top records the latest revision.
