How to read local crime and policing data

The crime dashboard helps people explore public policing data for England and Wales. Crime figures are useful for spotting broad patterns, but they should be read with care because reporting behaviour, category definitions and anonymised locations can all affect the picture.

Police data is anonymised and approximate

Public street-level crime data is not intended to identify victims, suspects or exact addresses. Locations may be moved to nearby anonymous points, so a map marker should be treated as an approximate area indicator.

Categories can hide important differences

Broad categories such as anti-social behaviour, public order or violence and sexual offences can contain different incident types. Comparing areas only by one headline total can therefore be misleading.

Recorded crime is not the same as all crime

The dashboard reflects crimes recorded and published through public policing datasets. It does not include every unreported incident and can be affected by changes in recording practice or public reporting behaviour.

Data notes

  • Crime and policing indicators are based on public police datasets where available.
  • Street-level data may be published with a delay and may not include every force or every category at all times.
  • Neighbourhood and force information can update separately from crime records.

Limitations

  • Do not use the data to identify individuals or exact addresses.
  • Small area comparisons can be volatile, especially where counts are low.
  • For personal safety concerns, use official police guidance and emergency channels.
